Frequent readers of this blog know that I am interested in methods of improving cognitive performance.
One way to improve performance is through supplementation (in consultation with your healthcare provider).
I recently read about an interesting study by researchers in Taiwan finding that taking one gram of turmeric with breakfast can improve working memory.
Working memory is important for planning, problem solving, and reasoning. Obviously, things you want to be functioning well while you prepare for the bar exam and throughout your life.
In the study itself participants were given one gram of turmeric mixed into their ordinary breakfasts (Lee et al., 2014). [One gram is equivalent to about one teaspoon.]
Their working memory was tested before and some time after their breakfast, and the results were compared with a placebo-control condition. The turmeric improved memory over the course of six hours.
It is important to note that this study involved adults with diabetes who were at higher risk for dementia. So, whether the turmeric will have the same effect on non-diabetic individuals is not yet demonstrated.
I found this study particularly interesting because I had been taking about a teaspoon of turmeric per day for the last month because I heard about its other claimed health effects.
So, maybe I was improving my memory as well?
If you want to try this, I recommend using good quality, organic turmeric. I like the Organic India brand.
