I have written elsewhere that taking Omega-3s fatty acids in the form of fish oil helps with brain performance and enhances mood. Now, a recent study has provided scientific evidence that Omega-3 fish oil reduces anxiety.
Researchers from Ohio State University reported that daily doses of Omega-3 supplements, providing about four to five times the amount of fish oil found in a daily serving of salmon, reduced anxiety among a group of medical students. The study was a 12-week, double-blind study with a placebo group, so these findings are legitimate. (You can read an abstract of the study’s results here.)
You can get good quality fish oil at many stores and online. I take Nordic Naturals because I like that fact that it is pharmaceutical grade and free of impurities, such as mercury and other toxins. But Nordic Naturals can be a bit pricey, so if cost is a concern, you can find purified (but not pharmaceutical grade) fish oil in lots of places, including CostCo.
