Most people know that if they pass the UBE in one state, they can transfer the score to another state and gain admission in that state.
But, there are some things to watch out for.
Expiration
Yes, your UBE score can expire.
The length of time for which your UBE score is valid varies by jurisdiction. So, if you are contemplating a transfer, make sure you know the deadlines.
If you miss the deadline, you will have to take the bar exam again.
Below is a screen shot of some varying transfer deadlines in effect in 2014 (be sure to locate up-to-date deadlines):
Local Requirements
Some jurisdictions will require that you take a local portion of the bar exam in addition to transferring your UBE score.
If this is the case with the jurisdiction into which you seek to transfer, then make sure you meet that requirement before your UBE score expires.
Conclusion
The portability of the UBE is a great boon to lawyers in our highly-mobile society. But, if you aren’t careful, you might miss important deadlines.
